No patents are known although the butts of some pistols serial number lower
400 are stamped PATENT PENDING. Production was about 1100 pistols in .22 rimfire only.
Very few were engraved. Frame is of brass and the barrels of iron. Generally the grips are of rosewood but walnut ivory and pearl have been foud. The front side is of German silver. No rear sight. The serial numbers are stamped on the bottom of the barrel, on the grip frame and on the inside of the grips. The pistols are stamped H.C. LOMBARD & Co. SPRINGFIELD MASS. Somes have no markings. See also Merwin & Bray and Morgan & Clapp. Their Deringers are almost identical. The main difference ist the cutout in the side surface of the breech for easy controlling if the pistol was loaded.
